In Organs of a Divided Labour - Flowers, Jeremy Ayer explores the globalized flower trade through meticulously crafted images that blend documentary and commercial photography aesthetics. Featuring 150 flowers from 49 varieties, Ayer photographed the entire selection of flowers available year-round in a typical Swiss flower shop. Each flower is captured against a bright white background in a catalog-like format, emphasizing the commodification of nature. The work adopts a multi-layered documentary approach, examining both commercial and artistic modes of creation. By stripping the flowers of their natural context, Ayer exposes the disconnect between their aestheticized presentation and the socio-economic realities they represent.
